eBay Fundraiser (ongoing). Help your chapter by donating items to our EZ Auctioning eBay fundraiser. EZ Auctioning will run the auctions to benefit the chapter (items that won't sell will go to charity).

Contact Geremy for details. Jaycees and members of the community can drop off items they wish to donate to the Chapter for sale on eBay at either EZAuctioning location: 110 S. West Street (Alexandria) or 6013-C Wilson Boulevard (Arlington). Email Geremy if you have large or multiple items for pick-up.

Hike 2 of a Yearlong Series. 9:30am-11am. Join the Jaycees for a 2.2 mile hike through parkland, and along the Potomac. This hike is not difficult. Jaycees, their families and friends---even dogs are welcome, if you do the cleanup! For more information, contact Sharon at id_vp@alexjaycees.org.

Community Yard Sales. 7 am - 2 pm. The Alexandria Jaycees have been holding Community Yard Sales (one of our main fundraisers) off and on since 1996. In recent years, the Community Yard Sale has evolved into a small flea market. We need volunteers to be on-site and supervise the vendors' set-up and tear down. Big Wine Event. 3 pm. Come experience tasting close to 50 wines with the guidance of Balducci's wine experts, and the camaraderie of the Alexandria Jaycees! Taste of Arlington / Chapter visitation! 1 pm - 5 pm. Meet us at the Arlington Jaycee Membership Table & face-painting booth. This takes place at the Ballston Common Mall and Wilson Boulevard. This is a chapter visitation—we will be visiting the Arlington Jaycee’s Membership Booth to see if we can help with recruiting or handing out materials. But also, we are there to enjoy the festival! GALS (Government Affairs Leadership Seminar)

In Washington DC. GALS is designed to offer Junior Chamber leaders the opportunity to meet with the women and men responsible for making public policies that guide the nation’s course of action. Special briefing sessions have also been held with Junior Chamber members. Special interest seminars have been designed to help Junior Chamber members understand complex issues regarding international trade, American business policy, and foreign and defense matters. Practical tips regarding lobbying elected officials and conducting election-year activities have also been featured. Contact Sally for more information or to participate.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) seminar. 7pm-9pm. Alexandria Chamber of Commerce building, 801 N. Fairfax Street, Suite 402. This seminar is for anyone who wants an introduction to what the Myers-Briggs tells us about our personalities. Registration required: visit www.alexjaycees.org/events. Red Cross Waterfront Festival, Old Town Alexandria, Waterfront. 2:30 - 6:30 pm. NEEDED: 12 volunteers to help serve beer to help raise money for the Alexandria Chapter of the Red Cross. All volunteers will receive free entrance to the festival (a $15 value!) and a free t-shirt. SOME ( So Others Might Eat). 10:45 AM- 1:30 PM. Become a partner in helping to solve the nation’s food crisis, learn culinary skills, better understand homelessness and creative ways to address social issues in our community. Individuals are needed to serve food in SOME’s dining room at 71 'O' Street, NW in Washington DC. Volunteers will spend time preparing and serving meals and interacting with SOME's guests. The dining room is limited to 15 volunteers per meal to ensure that each person is well utilized. We will be meeting at 10:45 AM and should be finished by 1:30 PM. Ronald McDonald House. 5 - 7pm. Make a homemade meal for a family member of a very ill child.
The Ronald McDonald House serves as a home away from home for families of very ill children in local hoospitals. We will prepare and serve a meal for 16-20 family members who may be staying in the house. We will meet at 5 PM at 3312 Gallows Road, Falls Church .Anyone intersted in participating should contact Diana at director3@alexjaycees.org.

Independence Day Holiday

Alexandria Birthday Celebration is a co-celebration of America’s Independence Day along with the founding of the City of Alexandria. This year, the celebration will be held at Oronoco Bay Park, the site of the Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront festival.  The highlights of the Birthday Celebration are live entertainment, arts and crafts, games for the kids, and an excellent fireworks display.  The Alexandria Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Activities co-ordinates this event. The Jaycees usually sell Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Bratwurst, Sodas, and Chips.  In years past, the event has raised from $500 on up. With good weather, we would hope to meet or exceed that amount this year.

88th U.S. Jaycees Annual Meeting and Presentation, 70th Annual Ten Outstanding Young Americans.

In San Diego, CA. Mid-year competitions, training, and entertainment are held at this convention. A Welcome Party begins the conference on Thursday. Elections also occur during the Annual Meeting of the Corporation during the convention. The highlight of the event on Saturday night is the TOYA Ceremony.  The Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) Ceremony honors ten individuals who have made great accomplishments in one of many areas including finance, innovation, social improvements, scientific or technological contributions, legal reform, etc. The ceremony is the presentation and acceptance of their award, and is a very moving experience. DC Central Kitchen: Culinary Job Training Program Assistance. 8:45 AM - 1 PM. We will work alongside men and women in the Culinary Job Training Program at DC Central Kitchen. This program prepares 4,000 meals that get donated each day to more than one hundred community agencies. Kitchen tasks include chopping vegetables, sorting fresh produce, mixing salads, portioning meals, deboning meat and assisting with other tasks to help operate the 10,000 square foot community kitchen. NEEDED: 7-10 volunteers. Contact Diana for more information or to volunteer.

Annual Goblin Games. 8 AM - 2 PM, Mt. Vernon Recreation Center. We will again partner with the Del Ray Children's Parade to provide halloween-themed games to 300-400 of the area's children. The program is geared toward children from 2 to 7 years of age, games include "bowling for bones" and "pin the wart on the witch". NEEDED:: 20-25 volunteers to dress in (non-scary) costumes to work 2 hour shifts. Contact Amy for more information or to volunteer. See what this event is all about here.

JCI World Congress, New Delhi, India. http://www.jciwc2008.in/. Features a full schedule of training, plus competitions: Speaking Championship Topic: “Be Better through Active Citizenship”. The topic for the 2008 Championship is “Be Better through Active Citizenship.” Francis D.M. Mwale of JCI Zimbabwe was the 2007 JCI World Public Speaking Champion. Who will be the 2008 Champion? The JCI World Public Speaking Championship offers members the opportunity to exercise and showcase their abilities and to share ideas on issues of particular importance to fellow members. National contest winners are encouraged to compete at the JCI Conferences. The winner from each JCI Conference will be expected to represent his or her Area in the final round of the JCI World Public Speaking Championship at the JCI World Congress to be held in New Delhi, India, November 4 –9, 2008.

St. Patrick's Day Parade. 12 - 1:45 PM, Old Town Alexandria. The Jaycees march in the parade and greet Alexandrians along the parade route. Tap a Tank at the Fox Meadow Winery. 1:30-4:30 PM (carpool leaves approx. 12 PM) . We will carpool to Linden, VA to visit the Fox Meadow Winery, where we will have the opportunity to taste wines at different stages of fermentation, and learn about the process of winemaking.  Reservations are required; the participation fee is $10 for Jaycees and $13 for non-members. More about the Winery: Three wines offered by Fox Meadow Winery in 2006 were awarded medals. The 2002 Cabernet Franc and the 2004 Syrah received gold medals in the 14th annual Towne Point competition and the 2005 Pinot Grigio won a bronze medal in the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition.

Community Appreciation Night. 7:30 p.m. at Alexandria City Hall (Sister Cities Conference Room 1101). As we do every year, we will honor one member from each the Alexandria Police Department, Fire Department, Public Schools Department, City Hall, and Sheriff's Office with an "Outstanding Public Service Award." The awards are intended to honor those individuals, age between 21 - 39, who have distinguished themselves, their families, and their communities by their service and conduct. Ronald McDonald House Meal. Jaycees will prepare and serve a meal to 16-20 people who may be staying in the Ronald McDonald House. Jaycees need to arrive by 5 PM and be prepared to serve no later than 6:30 PM at 3312 Gallows Road, Falls Church. Potomac River Watershed Clean Up; 9 am - 12 pm Join the Jaycees as we help with the 20th Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup! We will be working from the mouth of 4 Mile Run to Daingerfield Island. NEEDED 5-10 Volunteers are needed to pick up trash and illegally dumped items to keep the river clean! Throw on some old clothes, bring a pair of gloves, and prepare to have fun! All volunteers are invited to attend a post-clean up party on Saturday night. Walking Tour of Historic Old Town Alexandria. 1:00-3:00p Begins at the Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street. Walking tour will cover the history of Old Town Alexandria as reflected through its architecture and urban design. Examples feature a full range of architectural styles from Georgian through Art Deco and the pedestrian scale of the city plan and streets will be discussed. This year's tour will also feature the historic Cromley Lofts, Virginia's first LEED silver rated sustainable condos, and portions of the proposed Parker Gray National Register historic district. Rebuilding Together Alexandria. 8 am – 3 pm at the Carpenter's Shelter - 930 N. Henry Street
Alexandria, VA 22313. We have been assigned to help the Carpenter's Shelter with some yard work, including trimming, weeding and spreading new mulch in the front yard and playground. Come out, have fun and do good! If you are interested in this event, or want more information please contact Mike Gallagher via email or 703-965-0481.

All volunteers must fill out the Volunteer Sign-up Form located on the Rebuilding Together Alexandria website. All forms must be filled out and given to Mike Gallagher prior to April 26th in order to volunteer.

IMAGINE Dinner. 6 PM - 12 AM, location TBA; a Jaycee will host a dinner party in a home in Alexandria and invite Alexandria Jaycee members and friends to attend.  Later that evening, participants will gather with guests and volunteer hosts from other dinner parties at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria for dessert, drinks, dancing, and a silent auction. The $30 suggested contribution per attendee on the event will be the ticket to the entire event.  NEEDED: 10 - 15 attendees to participate.

Carpenter's Shelter Cookoff. The Birchmere, 3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria VA 22305. Proceeds from the cookoff will be used to support the Carpenter's Shelter for homeless children, families, and adults. NEEDED: 5-10 volunteers to assist with clean up (starting around 2:45 pm, lasting for approximately 30-45 minutes). Volunteers gain free admission (a $40 value!).
